Brenda Gail Webb popularly known as “Gayle” was born in Paintsville, Kentucky. She was the eighth child to be born to Melvin Theodore “Ted” Webb and Clara Marie.
Gayle reportedly started her career in Lynn’s band as a background vocalist in the 1960s (although Gayle says this technically never happened). In 1970, her sister Lynn assisted her in securing a recording deal with Decca Records. She experienced modest success, which inspired her to forge her own musical identity. Gayle changed to a more successful country pop sound under the teachings of producer Reynolds at United Artists Records.
Gayle’s first big song, “Wrong Road Again,” came out in 1975. With her debut on “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” Gayle had her greatest success in 1977. The song reached the top of the Billboard country chart, peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and quickly gained popularity around the world.
