When you’re a snow fan living in and around Washington you come to enjoy the imperfect snowfalls and learn to stomach waking up to less than expected. Those are most of the offerings in many winters.
Not this time.
Sure, we had to wait about two weeks longer than an average winter to pick up our first inch. And there was also that two-year snow drought we finally broke. But the snow was peaceful, long-lasting and accumulated with ease.
Most folks seem to love a snow day, at least as long as they don’t come too frequently. Seeing flakes flutter and feeling the magic and enjoyment as it piled up almost makes it entirely worth the wait.
And at the end of it all, the storm’s clouds bid adieu with an offering of a brilliant sunset.
We share some of our favorite photos of the storms below.
From friends of the Capital Weather Gang
In addition to the vital information that flows our way during storms from social media, our Flickr group is a wonderful photographic journey through the local area. It’s currently brimming with beautiful snow photos. See a sampling below.
X, formerly Twitter, was also the source of some striking snow scenes:
Capital Weather Gang’s Kevin Ambrose goes on a snow chase
For a snow loving weather photographer, the past couple of winters have offered slim pickings. So Capital Weather Gang’s Kevin Ambrose jumped to the case as flakes flew for this event. He was out on Monday at Manassas Battlefield Park and then headed to the Tidal Basin Tuesday morning.

“We’ve had such bad luck with snow in recent years I was wondering how long I’d have to wait,” said Ambrose. “And it was great to see a dry, powdery snowfall in D.C. that does not melt immediately.”
Ambrose is hungry for more. If the city sees more snow late week as anticipated, he’s planning to head out again.
A grand finale
Clouds lingered much of Tuesday as the storm pulled away before beginning to break midafternoon. Nearing evening, a majority of the low clouds were moving on but high clouds still sat in wait.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, those high clouds lit up. The fresh snow followed suit, reflecting the warm glow all around.
The scenes were magnificent.
Spectacular sunset tonight. I would have posted this sooner, but I had to wait for my fingers to thaw. Held my cold iPhone for too long while taking pics with bare hands in feels-like temp of 14°. pic.twitter.com/GZTWLQUe6R
